Founded in 1779, Jonesborough is Tennessee's oldest town and is located in the northeast portion of the state in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Visitors can get oriented at the local Vistors Center, where they can pick up a brochure and explore downtown's sights and attractions, including several restored buildings. Known as the Historic District, downtown is also home to many restaurants and shops, providing an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. Several bed and breakfast accommodations are found here, with many situated in elegant historic homes. The Jonesborough/Washington County History Museum also showcases the town's past through its collection of archives and artifacts. Another popular Jonesborough attraction is the International Storytelling Center, which also hosts the Storytelling Festival in October. The town celebrates its love of country music at the annual Music on the Square event, held from May to September. For outdoor enthusiasts, the Nolichucky River offers whitewater rafting and fishing opportunities, and for those that prefer staying dry, the nearby Appalachian Trail provides numerous hiking trails and paths. Families can also enjoy an outing at the Wetlands Water Park, with a number of water slides and plenty of fun.
